Nashville Bound

The band Nashville Bound brings their fresh bluegrass sound to our June 13th Gathering. The evening will kick off at 7:30 PM with some special ceremonies marking our final Gathering in the Bryant Recital Hall (Sloan-Morgan Building, 1220 Elizabeth Avenue, Central CPCC Campus). An hour-long concert by Nashville Bound will follow.

Charlotte Folk Society Gatherings are free and open to the public. We do appreciate donations, which are used to compensate performers and to pay for professional sound. Free parking is available in the CPCC Staff and Theater Deck, accessed from Fourth Street, between Charlottetown Avenue and Kings Drive. Join us after the concert for refreshments and your choice of a song circle, a slow jam, or a fast jam.

The members of Nashville Bound hail from Stanly and Union Counties in North Carolina. The six young performers range in age from thirteen to sixteen years of age and are the younger generation of popular bluegrass gospel artists, The Hatley Family. Nashville Bound has performed in Greensboro’s Koury Convention Center, Asheville’s Grove Park Inn, and several Nashville venues, including the Ryman Auditorium, home of the original Grand Ole Opry. As well, they’ve entertained at numerous county fairs, civic organizations, festivals, parties, and churches.

The band is comprised of sisters Kellie Hatley on banjo and Kacie Hatley on fiddle, Matthew Love and Derek VanHoose on guitars, Hanna Wright on mandolin, and David Smith on upright bass. Several of the members play multiple instruments and they take advantage of this in their performances. They strive to be not just musicians, but entertainers as well, and their audiences agree that they are doing so!

Nashville Bound enjoys participating in local fiddler’s conventions when possible. They began these experiences by entering in the “most promising” or “under sixteen” categories, but it became increasingly difficult for the group to compete in these divisions because of the rules which were often imposed. The group’s hard work and commitment to continual improvement paid off in a big way when the group attended the 2007 Mount Pleasant Fiddler’s Convention, a favorite regional event, and decided to step up and enter in the adult band and instrument categories. Though they were competing against numerous seasoned groups and convention favorites, Nashville Bound not only came away with several individual instrument awards, but also received the first place bluegrass band title.

In 2007 the band released their self-titled inaugural CD. The twelve selections include crowd favorites Rocky Top and Dueling Banjos, as well as vocals, instrumentals, three hymns, and one a cappella number.
