The Marilyn Meacham Price Youth Scholarship is a partnership between the Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College and the Charlotte Folk Society. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize and promote the development of new, young talent.

Swannanoa Gathering LogoThe Marilyn Meacham Price Youth Scholarship will be offered in Spring 2008. It will be fully funded by the Charlotte Folk Society and Warren Wilson College. The scholarship covers tuition, provided by the Charlotte Folk Society, and room and board, provided by Warren Wilson College.

The scholarship is to be awarded to an intermediate or advanced student of traditional folk music, either instrumental or vocal. The scholarship is a one-time award for one of the five weeks of music offered at the SwanGathering.

An applicant for the Marilyn Meacham Price Scholarship must:

  • be between the ages of 12 and 21,
  • either be a Charlotte Folk Society member as of March 1, 2008 or be a resident of one of the following counties: Mecklenburg County, NC; Cabarrus County, NC; Gaston County, NC; Iredell County, NC; Lincoln County, NC; Union County, NC; Lancaster County, SC; or York County, SC.
  • submit an application and letter telling of his/her interest in traditional folk music and why s/he would like to have the scholarship,
  • request his/her teacher or mentor to submit a letter of recommendation,
  • submit a non-refundable fee of $10 with the application (payable to "Charlotte Folk Society"),
  • All application materials must be received by Saturday, April 26, 2008. Completed applications and letters should be mailed with the $10 fee to the following address by the April 26th deadline: The Charlotte Folk Society, c/o Dennis Frost, 3325 Flamingo Drive, Charlotte, NC 28205.

Auditions for the scholarship will take place and the winner will be determined on Sunday, May 4, 2008. Applicants must be able to attend an interview and audition to be held at 4 PM in Room 103 of the Sloan-Morgan Building, 1220 Elizabeth Avenue, Central CPCC Campus, in Charlotte. Relatives and students of scholarship judges are not eligible to apply. 2008 judges will be Dennis Frost, Karen Singleton and Phil Lesser.

The winner will be given the opportunity to perform for the Charlotte Folk Society at some time after the Swannanoa Gathering.

Applicants will not be judged on the basis of religion, sex, ethnic background, economic status, or physical challenges.

The winner will receive a certificate of completion of the course on stage at Warren Wilson College in a special ceremony.

The Charlotte Folk Society will award first and second runners-up with gift certificates. In the event that the winner is unable to attend, the next runner-up will be awarded the scholarship.

All applicants will receive a year's membership in the Charlotte Folk Society.
