The Charlotte Folk Society is pleased to announce the 11th Annual Marilyn Meacham Price Youth Scholarship to the Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College, now being offered. The scholarship is named in honor of the founder of the Charlotte Folk Society and offered as a means of fulfilling our mission to perpetuate traditional music. It will be fully funded through a partnership between the Charlotte Folk Society and Warren Wilson College. The scholarship covers tuition ($475), provided by the Folk Society, and room and board ($370), provided by the college, a total scholarship of $845.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a student of folk music, either instrumental or vocal, who is playing at the intermediate or advanced level. The scholarship is a one-time award for any one of the following 2012 Swannanoa Gathering Folk Arts Workshops at Warren Wilson College:

  • Traditional Song Week, July 8 - 14
  • Celtic Week, July 15 - 21
  • Old-Time Week, July 22 - 28
  • Contemporary Folk Week, July 29 - August 4
  • Guitar Week, July 29 - August 4
  • Mando/Banjo Week, August 5 - 11
  • Fiddle Week, August 5 - 11
Transportation will be the responsibility of the scholarship recipient.

An applicant for the Marilyn Meacham Price Scholarship must:

  • be between the ages of 12 and 21,
  • either be a Charlotte Folk Society member as of February 1, 2012 or be a resident of one of the following counties: Mecklenburg County, NC; Cabarrus County, NC; Gaston County, NC; Iredell County, NC; Lincoln County, NC; Union County, NC; Lancaster County, SC; or York County, SC.
  • submit an application and letter telling of his/her interest in traditional folk music and why s/he would like to have the scholarship,
  • request his/her teacher or mentor to submit a letter of recommendation,
  • submit a non-refundable fee of $10 with the application,
  • return the Release Form (link at top of this page) signed by a parent or guardian, giving the applicant permission and holding the Charlotte Folk Society blameless in the event of any liability.
  • attend an interview and audition to take place at 2:30 PM on Sunday, February 26, 2012, in the Myers Park Baptist Church Education Building, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC. The applicant may have one accompanist during the audition.

All application materials must be received by Friday, February 17, 2012. Completed applications and letters should be mailed with the $10 fee to: The Charlotte Folk Society, c/o Dennis Frost, 3325 Flamingo Drive, Charlotte, NC 28205.

Auditions for the scholarship will take place and the winner will be determined on Sunday, February 26, 2012. Applicants must be able to attend an interview and audition to be held at 2:30 PM in the Myers Park Baptist Church Education Building, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC.

Relatives and students of scholarship judges are not eligible to apply. 2012 judges will be Mark Clemens, Phil Lesser, and Harry Taylor.

All applicants will receive a 2012 membership in the Charlotte Folk Society. The winner will receive a certificate of completion of the course on stage at Warren Wilson College in a special ceremony. First and second runners-up will receive awards valued at $25 and $10, respectively. In the event that the winner is unable to attend, the next runner-up will be awarded the scholarship.

The winner will be given an opportunity to perform for the Charlotte Folk Society at some time after the Swannanoa Gathering.

Applicants will not be judged on the basis of religion, sex, ethnic background, economic status, or physical challenges.
